Six Pillars Of Self-Esteem: Defining Self-Esteem
Many people think that self-esteem is simply about confidence. Showing that you’re confident. Acting and feeling like you’re confident. However, there’s actually a definition of what self-esteem is, sans the glimmer, and the glam.
Self-esteem, as defined by the dictionary. is having confidence in yourself. On the other hand, real self-esteem as defined by behavioral psychology and confidence experts is trusting in yourself, your character and values, and your abilities fully.
What a difference, right? And notice the keyword at the end of that sentence— “fully”. It’s being able to FULLY TRUST in the whole of who you are. Furthermore, it has to do with factors that are internal.
It’s not about your title, your profession, how you look, how much you earn, how many cars you have, how many promotions you’ve gotten, we could go on and on. Although definitely provide you with a kick of confidence. On the other hand, they’re fleeting. The high is short-lived and may even border on haughtiness and self-importance.
Instead, take a look at what makes you “you” from within. Therefore, here’s how to do it.
The Six Pillars Of Self-Esteem
1. Living Conscientiously
This has to do with you being mindful of how you live on a moment-by-moment, day-to-day basis. Be aware of and learn how to deal with things that are going on within and around you. That said, have the mindset of “being in this very moment.” Leave the past behind and don’t cling to the future that isn’t here yet. Be in the “now”, the present.
Second, accept the you that you are, what you do, how you think, with compassion, and with respect. The saying about “not being too hard on oneself”— that’s what this pillar speaks of. Accept who you are, what you can do, how you think. Moreover, stop making comparisons between yourself and anybody else. You’re you. And that’s that.
Blame-shifting is never helpful. Nor will it ever be. You make decisions, whether life-changing or mundane, every minute. From not hitting the snooze button to planning how you can budget your finances, everything depends on you and you alone. Hence, understand that because you are responsible for anything in your circumstances, be content with you. Alternately, if you need to solve a problem or want a change, only you can bring that about for yourself.
First and foremost, this isn’t talking about being pushy. That’s a different concept and quite frankly, one that you should never portray. Self-assertiveness is when you have to affirm and stand by decisions and perspectives especially when you believe in them wholly. Follow pillar number one so as not to disrespect others in asserting your ideas despite opposition.
5. Living Purposefully
Similar to pillar number 3, goals are much more prevalent in your life than you might aware of. That said, it’s essential to have goals. Career-oriented goals, relationship-oriented goals, savings, health, even groceries, practicing hobbies, it could be anything. Establishing goals and being committed to them will help mold you into a motivated, positive, and better you.
6. Personal Integrity
Always be a hundred percent true to your convictions and life values. You know what is right and what is wrong. Then, apply them to everything you do. Don’t cheat on others, and on yourself. Be committed to your work, your relationship, your self-development. Live by standards you’ve personally set and live them faithfully, honestly, and loyally.
